Throughout all powerful programs and organizations, you will find unbreakable
connections. Connections are what drives success. Many students fail to create connections and build relationships with colleagues, in other words, they fail to see the importance in it. Whether you a re going to medical school, law school, or just want to be successful in life, connecting with
other people is just as important as your GPA.
Connections are just as important as a GPA. The same way you work hard every day to
maintain your GPA, you should work just as hard to create connections and maintain them. As
you move ahead in your pathway towards your ultimate goal, you will know that the better and
stronger your connections with other people are, the easier and more successful your plan gets.
You will find out that when it comes to jobs and internships, who you know suddenly becomes
the breaking factor between getting hired or receiving the “We appreciate your interest at our
company but …”email.
The connections with people don’t just show up overnight; you have work on them and built them up from scratch. You have to gain the other person’s trust and care so that they arewilling to spend some time with you to help you out or put in a good word for you. Also, you have to make sure that you have good quality connections rather than any random people who know little about you. Here where the saying “choose quality over quantity” comes to play; knowing five well respected people in the community is far way better than knowing 100 people with no role in the community. That is not to say to ignore the people with small roles in your community and “kiss up” to those with big roles; but rather, build a trustworthy connection between the people closest to you.
However, do not ignore the other factors in your life that will lead you to reach your
goals such as GPA, community service, your mental/body health, and family; they are all equally
important. You will notice that when it is time for you to apply to other colleges, they will ask
you for recommendation letters, extracurricular activities, and unique aspects of your life that
sets you apart from everyone else. So start early and do not wait until the last second to build
your connections and gain the respect and trustworthiness of the people around you.
Connections can be compared to wine; the older and more well-kept they are, the sweeter and the more valuable they get. Also, people lead to other people. You will notice that once you start
becoming involved and getting to know more people, you will slowly have more tasks to
complete and more parties to attend. So connections do not also have to be super professional,
they can be small friendly connections between classmates or co-workers. Get out there and find
some good quality people to start building a connection with!
